Monday Metrics For Those Interested (nerds)

The last few weeks have seen a few major feature releases (Events and SMS authentication to name a few). In main though, we’re concentrating on performance right now. Boring as it may seem, if we can save 10ms per request, we’re trying.

Prior to our next major release (later this week we hope), we’ve been trying hard to speed things up. If you want to see how we’re doing, we’re releasing our stats on as many Monday’s as we can. Pleased to see our ApDex up  to 0.97 – a good 20% more than a few weeks back when we were struggling to deal with the requests.

How To Get Your Wi-Fi Hotspot Noticed – Change Your SSID

Your Wi-Fi SSID is your Wi-Fi network name. Customising it tells everyone you’re the generous business providing a Wi-Fi connection. Here are two tricks that will get your Wi-Fi hotspot noticed.

A Wi-Fi Nerd’s Tips to Getting Your Wi-Fi Hotspot Noticed for Free

1. Change your Wi-Fi name (SSID) to your business name. For example “Juan’s Taqueria Wi-Fi”. Juan’s Wi-Fi users now know that Juan does great tacos as well as fast Wi-Fi. It sounds simple but a lot of businesses never get around to it.

2. _Put an underscore at the beginning of your Wi-Fi name. This will push your Wi-Fi network to the top of everyone’s list of available Wi-Fi networks.

For example:

_PolkaSpots Supafly Wi-Fi
_Pretty Fly 4 a Wi-Fi

Because PolkaSpots is a cloud based Wi-Fi hotspot solution you can change your SSID from anywhere in the world at any time. You’ll find your network name settings in the “Network” tab.

Login To Your Wi-Fi Hotspots Using Your Mobile Number

That’s right, SMS logins are officially here. Fancy. Pants.

How does it work? Your customers simply enter their mobile number on your login screens. We’ll send them an SMS with a login code. They enter this for access.

You still choose how much time they get, and when they can get online. Currently you will need to open a ticket in Cucumber Tony to access this – currently in private beta, invitation only.

Here’s how you set up SMS logins on your Wi-Fi Hotspots?

Login to Cucumber Tony and head over to your location’s access settings. Select SMS from the drop down. That’s it, no more set up required.

When your customers visit your WiFi Hotspots, they’ll see a login page asking them for a mobile number

After they enter this, they will receive a code via text. Fancy pants.

Things to do with your Cucumber Tony Wi-Fi hotspot account?

Posted on: No Comments

Top of the list is connecting your customers to the Internet – obvs.

But once everyone’s online, what’s your cloud managed Wi-Fi account for? Today we talk about setting a Wi-Fi hotspot speed limit to improve your Wi-Fi service.

How to set a Wi-Fi hotspot speed limit & why it’s worth it…

Sharing your Wi-Fi with your guests is easy. But once they’re all connected to your hotspot lots of users can slow your Wi-Fi down.

Creating a Wi-Fi speed limit per user (or managing your bandwidth as the geeks call it) regulates your broadband so more people can connect and still receive a good Wi-Fi service.

This keeps your Wi-Fi fast and your hotspot busy.

To edit your Wi-Fi speed limit click here…

If you’re brand new to PolkaSpots you can set up a Cucumber Tony Wi-Fi account and manage your broadband bandwidth here…

Why Cloud Managed Wi-Fi?

Posted on: No Comments

The cool kids keep talking about putting stuff in the Cloud. Please try and ignore their turtle necks and NHS glasses for a moment, because a cloud managed Wi-Fi service is useful for everyone – not just the geeks.

Your Wi-Fi service is the bit that turns your everyday router into a clever Wi-Fi access point that you can control.

In the old days – most of the information to manage your Wi-Fi service was stored in your Wi-Fi router. This meant there wasn’t much room to do anything clever with your Wi-Fi.

With cloud based Wi-Fi, your Wi-Fi access point looks up to the cloud to get the information it needs. It’s a leaner, meaner, more reliable way of managing your Wi-Fi hotspot.

When you sign up to the PolkaSpots service you’ll have access to a cloud based dashboard (like a website) where you can customise your Wi-Fi settings.

Because your Wi-Fi service is in the cloud, you can change your Wi-Fi settings from anywhere in the world. Just log onto the management website. You’ll see all your Wi-Fi access points working away. If something goes wrong you’ll be able to see which wireless access point is causing trouble and fix it quick.

And, there’s now room to do fancy stuff – like design login pages and restrict Wi-Fi users. All from your Wi-Fi cloud.

A cloud managed Wi-Fi service puts you in control of your Wi-Fi hotspot. You choose how to moderate guest access, not your Wi-Fi provider or your users. It’s your Wi-Fi connection after all.
